Chrome & Nikasil Chrome plating is basically that; chrome is stuck to steel through chemical or electro- plating. The idea here is that the chrome has wonderful slickness and resistance to abrasion and makes a cylinder bore better through reduced friction of the ring rubbing against it. Plated Cylinders: (Includes nickel ceramic coatings (Nikasil), chrome, Electrofusion, and boron composite.) If the plated cylinder is in good condition, honing may not be necessary. If deglazing is necessary, DO NOT use a ball hone. Use a rigid or brush type diamond hone. Plated cylinders cannot be bored oversize without replating or resleeving.

Jul 17, 2017 · The coating was further developed as a replacement for hard-chrome plated cylinder bores for Mercury Marine Racing, Kohler Engines, and as a repair replacement for factory-chromed snowmobiles, dirt bikes, ATVs, watercraft and automotive V8 liners/bores. Nikasil is short for Nickel Silicon Carbide. Haven't checked yet, but supposedly this bike came with chrome bores - so I'm collecting data on what to do about that. Looks like the best solution is new 1,000cc pistons and cylinders, which require boring the block. Will the T3 heads mate up satisfactorily? Is it possible to remove the chrome and have the cylinders nikasil plated?

In two-stroke motorcycle racing, chrome-plated cylinder bores gave way in the 1980s to Mahle’s Nikasil, which is a layer of electroless nickel containing 5-percent super-hard silicon carbide ... The heart of any chainsaw or concrete saw is the cylinder. The table above shows the difference in the Specs of the commonly found Chrome plated cylinder and the Force-Tec Nikasil plated cylinders.

Jun 05, 2009 · how can you tell the difference between a cast iron, nickel ceramic, electrofusion, boron cylinder and crome molly cylinder on a dirt bike? Can you tell by make or serial number, or a stamped number on the cylinder. I have a 1988 Honda CR 125. Need to know so I know what piston ring to get. Re: nikasil or re-sleeve i would send out the cylinder and have it re-plated. when you put a sleeve in a cylinder u also have too run a different type of piston. also have a much better chance of a cold seize. I would like to hear from experienced A&P's about your thoughts on installing OEM new cylinders and the use of steel vs nickel barrels. I understand the corrosion issues, etc. More interested in your field experiences with both materials and the lifespan of one vs the other. These are my personal observations and the decision to hone, not hone or replate is always taken on a case by case basis, what you do to a cylinder is at your risk.

I had my barrels Nikasil plated through Rubber Chicken Racing Garage, and sent Goetze piston rings along for fitting with the newly-plated and honed barrels. They didn't say anything about the Goetze rings being inappropriate for the Nikasil plating. Of course, silence does not necessarily mean an endorsement.

The minute particle size (which averages three microns) makes our Nicom™ cylinder plating composite 100% non-abrasive. Due to the very high hardness value and thickness which is applied, the U. S. Chrome cylinder coating is superior to any factory or aftermarket Nikasil, hard chrome, electrofusion, or iron or steel sleeve alternative! Nikasil sleeve coatings have been lost within 5000 km use with the wrong viscosity oil. The drained oil looked like aluminum paint.
